The Competitive Edge

Ah, remember the good old days when an eager graduate grabbed his diploma, threw his hat in the air, suited up for an interview, took the first available job, worked for 50 years, and eventually retired with the same company. Those days are long gone. To survive in today's job market you need the competitive edge.

Changing Workplace

competitive edge
Today's worker changes jobs about eight times before they retire. Some of those changes lead upward and others are due to downsizing, lay-offs, and firing. The term "job security" has become an oxymoron.

To stay competitive, to stay happily employed, the 21st century worker must always be prepared for what is yet to come. The best way to do that is to be continually adding new skills, knowledge, certifications, and degrees to increase your value.

Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning and skill development is the key to staying competitive, motivated, and rejuvenated.

Prepare yourself by asking:
  • What are the future trends in my industry?
  • What key skills or knowledge will I need to stay on the cutting edge?
  • Where can I get formal training, certification, and degrees in these areas?
  • How can I informally add to my body of knowledge and skills?
  • How will I let my employer know that I have this knowledge?
  • What new positions or projects can I volunteer to take on?
  • Do I have self-sabotaging beliefs that are preventing me from being a lifelong learner?

In times of drastic change, it is the learners who inherit the future.
