Recession Proof Your Career

"Is my job safe?" This is the looming question on the minds of an increasing number of Americans. As the economy melts down, jobs disappear, and entire industries go under, the wise employee can't help but ask, "Is my career recession proof?"

While it is true that some professions and industries will fair better than others in this shifting world economy, the Career Conqueror doesn't leave his or her job security to chance. As the maxim states, "Fail to plan, plan to fail."

Follow these three tips to begin to recession proof your career today.

Tip #1: Be Future Focused

As a recovering 'run my career according to the whim of the moment professional,' I zealously implore you, don't leave your career path to chance. Plan your future.

Recession Proof
  • Be Intentional - Withcareer planning, clarify your short and long-term goals and then begin with the end in mind.
  • Be Unique - Use individual branding to highlight your most marketable strengths and talents. Decide today, what unique qualities set you apart from your competition.
  • Be Connected - Use Network Magic. From people inside your organization to those in seemingly unrelated fields, who you know is more important than what you know. Network relentlessly.

Tip #2: Be Employer Focused

As much as your employer may like you, the bottom-line for them will always be, "How have you made me money, saved me money, or solved my problem." Contribute and document your contribution regularly.
  • Be Invaluable - Ensure job security by contributing meaningfully and invaluably.
  • Be Prepared - Gain the competitive edge. Continually add new skills, knowledge, and certifications to add greater value to your employer.
  • Be Relational - Be known as a great communicator and a team player.

Tip #3: Be Personally Proactive

You are your product. Thus, it is up to you to keep yourself inspired, prepared, and positive. These qualities matter.
  • Be Positive - Make change happen - cheerfully!
  • Be Proactive - Create and pursue your own personal and professional development plan.
  • Be Efficient - Manage not only your time but your energy as well.
  • Be Wise - Surround yourself with supportive people - your coach, mentors, and peers.

Remember, this is not the first recession America has faced nor will it be the last. The economy will bounce back; sanity and stability will return.

In the meantime, take charge of as much of your career as you can, put your best foot forward, and commit to turning this challenging time into a growth opportunity.
