Networking Skills

Imagine a cheap hotel banquet room, crammed with people in somber business attire, wandering aimlessly, shoving their business cards into every open hand. This is what many people envision when you mention networking skills. No wonder they want to avoid it at all costs.

Networking is Essential

But if 85% of all jobs are never advertised, then the only way they will ever be discovered is through other people. Networking is essential to your career and job search success.

Thankfully, the core principle that drives real networking is giving, not getting. Think about it, when you hear of a need, you want to help. And when others see a way to help you, they feel good. As BNI, the world's largest referral organization has discovered:

"Giver's Gain"

Networking Definition

Networking is about building and enjoying great relationships, something that most of us like to do.

Try this, go into your next lunch meeting, conference, or networking event with this thought in mind, "Who can I help today?" Focusing on the other person will take the pressure off and reward you in the long run.

Key Networking Skills

Develop these five skills and you will soon be a master networker.

1. Be prepared. At all times, in all places, have your networking tools ready.

2. Be generous. Come prepared to share. Be a resource for helpful information, industry trends, great events, or other contacts. Listen carefully to others and look for ways to meet their need.

3. Be interesting. People will want to talk to you and develop a relationship with you when they see how helpful and fascinating you are. Ask intriguing questions, offer pertinent comments, and make insightful observations to keep your listener coming back for more.

4. Be positive. Walk into the room with a smile on your face. Enjoy relationship building. Approach each person with an enthusiastic attitude, knowing that as you give, you will also gain.

5. Be persistent. You will get better with practice. Watch and learn from others. Try out new skills. Work with a career coach. Most importantly, follow-up with every one you meet.

Developing a strong network is the key to accessing the hidden job market. Relationship is everything!
