Why Job Networking?

What is the most productive job search strategy? Networking. In fact, 60-70% of all jobs are found through networking. That's a statistic that is hard to ignore, yet strangely enough, most people do.

Typically, job searchers spend most of their efforts on the things that yield the least results. Things such as: sending out resumes, perusing want ads, surfing the internet, and/or working with a headhunter.

While those traditional methods are more comfortable, they are not the most effective! Remember this faithful adage throughout your career transition process,

"It's not what you know, it's who you know that counts."

Which brings us right back to this fact: job networking is essential.

What is Networking?

Networking
Networking is the process of cultivating productive relationships - those with whom you can share ideas, leads, timely information, and eventually, referrals.

For job hunters, there are two categories of people that you ultimately want to know.
  • Contacts who can provide you leads for job opportunities
  • Contacts who are in a position to give you a job

If you have already exhausted your small group of contacts and still not found a job, take heart. True networking is reaching out to people (those you already know and those you don't) to reach the people that you ultimately want to reach. Your career is too important for you to waste time doing things that don't work. Network, instead. Begin brushing up on your networking skills. Prepare your networking tools. And then, you will be ready to go.

With job networking, you will spend the majority of your time meeting people who can help you meet other people. To ensure quick results and great success, utilize all of the methods below:

So, if you are now committed to spending more than half of your job searching time where it needs to be spent, where do you start? Begin by brainstorming.

Include:
  • Members of professional organizations
  • Past or present co-workers
  • Friends you're in touch with regularly
  • Old friends, such as college buddies whom you see infrequently
  • Members of your religious community
  • Peer volunteers
  • Informational interviewees
  • Your kids' friends' parents
  • Your mentor(s)
  • Business associates, such as customers, clients, vendors, and suppliers

Soon you will have a growing list of contacts ready to connect you to the very people you need to know.

In this economy, job networking is your lifeline. Whether you currently have a job or are seeking a new one - today is the day to begin building your all important job network.

Network with everyone, all the time, and you will be off to a good start.
