As mercenary as it may seem, each time you are being considered for a

When a business invests in something new, they do so only because they expect it to generate more business, income, or goodwill than they put into it.

An employer invests in you in many ways: time, money, and benefits. In return, they expect that your salary package will pay for itself through all the ways that you contribute to the team.
