Job Search Plan

In this world of too few jobs and too much competition, your career cannot be left to chance. You need a job search plan.

Job Search Success
Think about it this way. Before you take a dream vacation, you first decide where you want to go, what you need to pack, how much time you'll take off, and the route you will take. Before you ever leave your driveway - your dream vacation begins with a plan.

Your dream career also begins with a plan. You need to envision your ideal job, pack your job search tools, schedule time for all the necessary activities, and plan the route you will take to get there. A successful job search begins with a plan.

The Key to Success

You can succeed. When you use the Job Search Ladder to Success as your guide, you will know exactly what to do, how to do it, and when it needs to be done. No more missed steps. No more wasted time. Each step brings you closer to your goal - a job you love.

Overview of Job Search Plan

1. Identify (Target Time: 2 hours - 2 weeks)

Who are you? No, I don't mean your name. What are you passionate about? What activities are so enjoyable that they feel almost effortless? What valuable skills have you acquired? What kind of work environment causes you to thrive?

"To thine own self be true."
William Shakespeare

It is only after you truly know yourself that you can begin to identify your dream. Need help?

Take advantage of these career assessment tools:

  • Skills Assessments
  • Interest Inventories
  • The Strengths-Finder
  • Personality Profiles

Each of these instruments can add valuable information to your journey of career self-discovery.

2. Explore (Target Time: 1 day - 1 week)

Once you know yourself, it's time to start thinking about where you want to go and to discover what industry and activities you love. In this phase, you will explore a variety of industries, companies, positions, and make a list of potential contacts. Stumped?

Make use of these:
  • Library
  • Online resources
  • Company websites
  • Competitors websites
  • Key contacts

Congratulations - now you have a firm foundation from which to launch your search.

3. Prepare (Target time: 2 days)

It's time to fill your toolkit with everything you'll need to present and position yourself as the winning candidate for that ideal job. Begin by packaging your unique and valuable strengths through career branding.

Once you are clear on your brand:

Your individual brand is the centerpiece of everything else you do. It will permeate your written material and you will weave its message skillfully and repeatedly into your 'success stories', your 30 second introduction, and your interview answers.

Now you are prepared. It's time to launch your formal job search.

4. Launch (Target time: Continues throughout your job search)

Job Search Success

Equipped with your unique career brand, target industry, company information, and networking goals you can now launch your formal job search plan with confidence. By understanding the most effective job search methods, daily you can increase your odds of success. During this step, you will:
  • Use informal interviews to uncover the hidden job market
  • Arrange informational interviews
  • Make networking phone calls
  • Conduct in-person meetings with your targeted contacts

This process will continue as you uncover more and more opportunities until you find the one you want.

5. Interview (Targeted Time: several weeks to several months depending on the company's interview process.)

You are in the home stretch. This is where all your hard work pays off. Each interview is an opportunity to present your unique brand, match it to the company's needs, and gain the competitive edge.

Work Strategically is here to help you get ready for your job interview, review common job interview questions, rehearse interview answers, and prepare for behavioral interviews.
