Job Searching in Tough Times

job economy down
I don't have to tell you - the job economy is down. Way down. Millions of people are combing the classifieds, calling long-lost friends, and endlessly surfing the net, all hoping to be the first to hear of that elusive job opening.

Fear is running rampant and sound job searching advice is rare.

Take heart. There are jobs available. Good employees are always needed. And by applying a few sound job search techniques, you can confidently move ahead. Let's begin with the ten top things you need to know
.

Top Job Search Techniques in a Down Economy

Network - Talk to everyone you know, and everyone that they know, and everyone... well, you get the idea. Networking is by far the most effective way to find a new job. Don't overlook a single contact.

Create Clarity - Know what you want and what you can provide. Telling a contact that you are looking for a job is not nearly as effective as saying, "I'm a top notch salesman looking to help a struggling company get their new product off the ground."

Focus on Opportunities Not Openings - An opening is an advertised position. The competition for these is fierce. Opportunities, on the other hand, are everywhere and you will find them as you identify target companies, research their needs, and then offer yourself as a solution.

Concentrate on Similar Positions - The best way to shorten your job search is to target similar positions in similar industries.

Concentrate on Your Value and Skills - If your industry is severely downsizing, then emphasize your cross-over skills such as a turnaround expert, cost control manager, or your ability to make the impossible happen - overnight.

Be Flexible - Be willing to "settle" for a job that is less than ideal, knowing that as the economy improves and your value becomes known, you will move up.

Think Outside the Box - Be open to moving to a new location, training in a new area, or working two complimentary part-time jobs to bring in needed income.

Stay Visible - Research shows that after the first few months of job searching, most job seekers begin to withdraw and default to ineffective online job searching methods. Attend professional events, conferences, and career fairs. Volunteer in the community and build new relationships.

Be Bold - Step outside your comfort zone. Most people dread job searching activities but they have to be done. Jump in with both feet, try new things, and set new goals. Your hard work will pay off.

Stay Positive - I know that it's hard to be optimistic in these difficult times. Unfortunately, your contacts will smell your fear, and it will work against you. So, set realistic expectations and reward yourself for effort (not just results) all along the way. Lastly, surround yourself with positive people who can lift you up when you feel down.
The global job economy is completely out of your hands. But your daily actions and attitudes are not. Make a good job search plan, follow it daily, and when the time is right, you will see success.
