Functional Resume

In today's complex world, it's a relief to find something that is simple. Choosing a resume format is just that. As you research resumes, you will quickly come to realize that there are only two main styles, the chronological resume and the functional resume.

When you need a resume that highlights your accomplishments and takes the focus off any employment or experience gaps, the functional resume may be just the ticket.

Functional Resume Outline

Functional resume
Contact Details
  • Your first name and surname
  • Your address
  • Home and cell phone
  • Email address (home - not your current employers)
  • Website/blog/online portfolio

Objective
  • Tailor your objective to the specific job title, focusing on how you will fulfill the needs of the employer.

Professional Achievements
  • List four or five major achievements specific to your current or prospective role. Quantify the results as much as possible.

Skills
  • List the skills you possess that apply to this job
  • List any relevant IT skills
  • Add fluent language skills

Work History
  • Include job title, company name and contact information, and dates of employment. If your employment time was short, list it by years instead of months and years.

Education
  • Level of education, degree, school name, school city and state, dates of attendance or graduation.

References
  • State "References are available on request."

Another option with a functional resume is to try and weave your work history in with your accomplishment and skills section to further minimize any glaring gaps. Unfortunately, many employers are frustrated by this and unwilling to take the time to sort it out.

My advice is to keep it simple and highlight your strengths.
