Email Cover Letter

In this day and age, life moves fast and the busy employer, desperate for help, wants to simplify his hiring decision in every way that he can. For many job seekers, that means your initial contact may take place exclusively through email.

Be prepared. Make sure you have your resume and a great email cover letter ready to send at a moments notice. Your speed, efficiency, and quality of work will be sure to stand out in the employer's mind.

About

An email cover letter resembles a paper letter in many ways - but they do differ on a few key points. Read the formatting suggestions below and your email will be ready to work its magic.

Formatting

Your cover letter should be brief, less than 200 words. Use the formatting suggestions below and your future employer will be impressed.
  • Subject line - Use something clear and concise, such as, "Resume Submission."
  • Header - There is no need to include a formal header. Simply begin with, Dear (recipient's full name,).
  • Paragraph 1 - Explain your reason for writing in a way that grabs the reader's interest.
  • Paragraph 2-3 - Describe why you are qualified for the position. Highlight your accomplishments and skills (bullets points are good, as they will catch the reader's eye.) Summarize why you are right for the job.
  • Paragraph 4 - Direct the reader to your resume. Give times when you are available to be interviewed and mention that you will be calling soon to follow-up. Thank them for their time. Include your name, phone number, and email address once again.
  • Close - End your letter with a standard closing, such as, "sincerely." Skip four lines, type your name and full contact information.

Keep this email cover letter short (200 words maximum) and the font simple. Add a professional look and it should be well-received.
