Cover Letter Help

Job Interview
You've spent years acquiring your unique set of skills. And you've spend hours transferring that information into a compelling resume. But you need one more thing - cover letter help.

A well-written cover letter is the crowning touch on your already impressive resume. And it will be easy to write using the resources available here.

Begin by using the formatting suggested in our cover letter for a resume article, or even easier, just download the free Cover Letter Template.

But before you send it off, do one more thing. Read through this cover letter help list of "dos and don'ts" to make sure your letter is the best that it can be.

Dos

  • Customize your letter with the name of the intended recipient.
  • Send the original letter on quality resume paper.
  • Keep it simple, clear, and concise.
  • Use bullet points to make your accomplishments stand out
  • Keep it brief - no more than one page in length. Shorter is even better.
  • Phrase everything with positive language.
  • Make sure that by the end of the letter, the recipient knows exactly why they should hire you.

Don'ts

  • If you don't know the gender of the recipient, don't use a gender specific salutation.
  • Don't rewrite your resume in the cover letter. Write just enough to grab their interest, so that they will want to turn to the resume for more.
  • Don't wait for them to call. Mention that you will be contacting them to answer any questions. Call them about 3 business days after they receive your letter.
  • Check for mistakes or typos. This has the potential to eliminate you immediately.
  • Use professional, understated stationary.
  • Sign the letter. Blue ink is standard.

Your cover letter represents you. Make it good. Spend some time composing it, have a friend or colleague edit it, and then check it one more time.

By using a good cover letter format and following these "dos and don'ts" you can send your letter confidently knowing that it will do all that it was intended to do.

With your professional cover letter and resume in hand, you are well on your way to landing that coveted personal interview.
