Career Planning

Have you ever wanted to gaze into a crystal ball to learn what your work future holds?

Think of the direction, the drive, and the determination you would if you knew what was coming, what others would do, and that things would turn out great.

Face it, if we knew where we were going, we might actually get there.

If only...

Well, I don't have any crystal balls lying around but I have something even better. Something that has been proven to lead to phenomenal success, a simple secret that will put you in the top 3% of Career Conquerors. Do you know what it is?

Benefits of Career Planning

The secret to predicting your future - is to write it. Yes, it is that simple. Consider the oft-reported results of the 1954 Harvard Goal-Setting Study, since replicated at Dominican University and the ThinkTQ Goals Study.

The findings were this:
  • 83% of business school graduates had no clearly defined goals.
  • 14% had goals but didn't write them down.
  • 3% had written goals and written steps to achieve them.

The 3% that had written goals and strategies earned
an astonishing ten times more than the 83% group.

Career Conquerors don't have a crystal ball; they have something better - a written career plan.

Develop your plan by setting aside some time to ask yourself these pivotal questions:

  • What do I want my career to look like 5, 10, or 20 years from now?
  • What will I be doing? What industry am I in?
  • How do I bring value to that organization?
  • What do I earn? What perks do I have?
  • What values are non-negotiable as I advance? (achievement, altruism, risk taking, etc.)
  • How many hours or days do I work? Where do I live?
  • What steps do I need to begin to take today to make this happen?

Write your goals in the present tense. Share them with someone else. And most importantly, hold an unwavering belief that you can, indeed, achieve them.

Remember that it's okay if you don't hit the bulls-eye every time. Just having a target will exponentially increase your chance of success. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Take charge of your work life - be your own crystal ball.
