About Career Assessments

Kim Avery
What do you want to be when you grow up? This question sparks our imagination as young children and haunts our dreams as adults. For the job seeker and the career changer there is no more important question to answer and no answer that seems more elusive.

The fact of the matter is that most of us have no idea what we really want to do. It is hard to choose the right career path when there are so many unknowns.

  • What is my ideal work setting?
  • What is my communication style?
  • What are my strengths?
  • How do I like to resolve conflict?
  • What gives me a sense of significance?
  • What skills do I have?
  • What are my interests?
  • What occupations are a good match for my skills and interests?
  • What values are most important to me?
  • What motivates me?
  • and more...
Career assessments can help. While assessments are not a magic bullet, a crystal ball, or an edict from on high, they do provide increased clarity, career alternatives, self-knowledge, valuable industry and occupational information, and help with your decision-making process.

Career assessments can be extremely useful but only when you use the right ones at the right time. In other words, your career confusion will only get worse if you take too many assessments, or take the wrong assessments, allowing yourself to be swamped by information overload.

Using Career Assessments

To benefit from career assessments:
  • Decide what you need to know
  • Take one or two valid and respected assessments
  • Discuss the results with a colleague or career professional

Types of Career Assessments

Career assessments fall into three major categories: personality, interests, and values. Each type can add an important piece of information to your career puzzle.

Personality Tests

Personality tests will increase your self-knowledge, providing useful information about your communication style, problem-solving style, motivational elements, and preferred work setting. Some reliable tests that fall into this category are the:
  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
  • DiSC Personality Profile
  • Golden Personality Type Profiler
  • Keirsey Temperament Sorter

Interest and Skills

Interest and skill assessments help you narrow down your career options by confirming your occupational likes and dislikes. They measure your proven abilities and skills which can then be used as a predictor of future job performance.

Popular assessments for interests and skills are:

Self-Directed Search
Career Liftoff Interest Inventory
Strong Interest Inventory and Skills Confidence Survey
Career Transition Report
The Strengths-Finder

Values

Clarifying your values is an essential component of career success. Clearly knowing your non-negotiables allows you to match yourself with an employer who values the same things. Examples of value assessments are:
  • Rokeach Value Survey
  • Values Arrangement List
  • The Values Scale
