Can't Find a Job?

Cant find a job
Are you having trouble finding a good job? Or any job at all? Discouraged? Worn out? Feeling defeated? I understand.

Everyday thousands of new job seekers flood the market. Positions are scarce and the competition is fierce. How can you make sure that you are the one who gets the job?

It used to be that talking to friends, sending out resumes, and interviewing led to that coveted job offer, but no more. In times like these, traditional, passive job searching methods are not enough.

In this tough economy, it is time to move beyond traditional methods. It is time to engage in a strategic search. Think about the difference between a passive/traditional job search and a strategic one.

Traditional Search:

Browse newspapers, online job boards, and attend networking events to get word of a job opening. Once you learn of an opening, you customize your resume, type a cover letter, send it in, and wait. But - while you are doing this, so are dozens of other equally qualified candidates. It is hard to stand out when you are just one of a crowd.

Success Rate for a Traditional Search: 5-8%.

Strategic Job Search:

The strategic job searcher doesn't wait for an opening, he goes out and creates his own opportunity. What is that? A job opportunity is an unadvertised position for which you are qualified.
Success Rate for a Strategic Job Search: 58-62%

Can't find a job? Remember, you have a 300 percent higher chance of securing a job by focusing on opportunities instead of openings.

Five Steps to a Strategic Job Search

1. Stay in the know

Constantly read, research and uncover companies that are a good match for your skill set. Much of this research can easily be done at night using the internet.

2. Research
Career hunt

Learn everything you can about the companies you are interested in. Discover where the company is headed. Talk to people in the know by networking with employees. (Again, use the internet to learn the names of key employees and then use your networking skills to reach them.) Gain insight into the company's problems and begin to brainstorm ways that you can help solve them.

3. Networking

Networking continues to be the most effective way to land a new job. Dig deeply for a connection in the targeted company. Solicit contact names from employees, colleagues, clients of the company, vendors, association members, and related professionals (bankers, accountants, etc.) Network online through blogs, forums, and online networking sites.

4. Keep your name top of mind

Attend association meetings, conferences, seminars and more. Write blogs and articles that highlight your expertise. Increase your online presence through personal branding.

5. Weave traditional job search methods throughout

Post your resume and spend no more than 1-2 hours a day scanning job search sites.

Life is hard when you can't find a job. Don't waste your valuable time competing with the crowd. Be active. Be strategic, and you will soon be successful.
